The American Medical Association (AMA) and the New York University School of Medicine (NHSM) are calling for men to join a study to test the efficacy of Viagra (sildenafil) in treating erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
The study, led by Pfizer Inc., was funded by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration and supported by the National Institutes of Health. The results of the study will be presented at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology and New York Heart Association (NYHA/NHA) on February 24, 2024. The meeting is scheduled for March 23 at the American Heart Association Medical Conference in Jackson, Westchester County, New York.
Viagra is approved to treat ED in men between 18 to 64 years old. It works by relaxing the muscles in the blood vessels of the penis and increasing blood flow. This will improve the ability to get an erection.
Viagra works by improving blood flow to the penis. It is not approved to treat PAH. Viagra is also not approved to treat ED. In fact, it is not approved for the treatment of PAH. A recent clinical trial showed that sildenafil is effective in improving erection quality in men with ED and PAH.
Viagra is not approved to treat PAH in men. However, its safety is still unknown.

The study was led by the U. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center and the New York Heart Association (NYHA) Medical Conference. The study is expected to be held in August 2024 in Jackson, Westchester County, New York.
To enroll men, men will need to visit their physician to receive a prescription for sildenafil. This prescription is for sildenafil (100 milligrams) only. The study will assess the effect of sildenafil on erectile function in a sample of 200 men, all diagnosed with ED and PAH. The study will be conducted in the Veterans Affairs Department, the New York Heart Association, and the New York Heart Association Medical Conference.
The men will be enrolled between November 2024 and February 2025, in the V. A. and New York Heart Association Medical Center. They will be evaluated at the Veterans Affairs Department, the New York Heart Association Medical Center, and the New York Heart Association Medical Conference, with a follow-up visit to March 2024.
In addition, the men will be enrolled at the New York Heart Association Medical Center for the treatment of PAH in men, in men with ED and PAH, and men with erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. If they are not enrolled in the study, their provider will contact them to arrange a follow-up visit.
